Lake Ontario Fishing Guide

Posted on 16th November 2009 by admin in Uncategorized - Tags: ,

Just came across a website that may be of some interest to Lake Ontario fishers. Lots A Limits Charters & Guide Service is owned and operated by Captain Tim Meador in Henderson Harbor, New York. His Lake Ontario charter fishing and guiding business started on the waters of Western New York’s Oneida Lake and the tributaries of Lake Ontario, and now extends full time on the waters of Lake Ontario and Salmon River. You can get a lot of valuable fishing information at this site. There is some good info on Brown Trout fishing, Walleye fishing, Lake Trout, and Northern Pike.

Their charter boat is in Henderson Harbor, which is a cozy little town just west of Watertown, NY. It has many lodging and restaurants. There are four restaurants located in the Harbor that offer great food, drink and fine dining. All this is walking distance from your lodging. If you are planning a trip, check out the site HERE.

Declining Sportfishing Industry Hurts Lake Ontario Counties

Posted on 13th October 2009 by admin in Uncategorized - Tags: , ,

Many of the New York counties near Lake Ontario are suffering due to spending declines and lost jobs. A recent study by Cornell University has predicted that fishing trips on Lake Ontario could decline by as much as 32 percent by 2012 compared to 2007. New York’s largest sport fishery is Lake Ontario. As recently as 2007, the industry had around 1000 jobs and generated over $42 million in spending by tourist fishermen in the counties of Oswego, Orleans, Niagra, Monroe, Jefferson, Cayuga, and Wayne. There was also significant spending by out of county fishermen. Tourism officials do not need to read a study to know how much the industry has struggled, and are scrambling for different ways to compensate for the decline. An additional concern is that the younger generation doesn’t seem to be participating in shows. It appears that there are only older men shopping for new rods and reels. This is troubling to those concerned about the future for the industry.

Bait Suggestions for Fishing in Red Lake

Posted on 7th September 2009 by admin in Uncategorized - Tags: , , ,

Question From a Reader:

This question doesn’t necessarily pertain to Sodus Point Fishing, but is about Lake Ontario. We are planning on a big fishing trip next week to Northern Ontario and Red Lake. I have heard about the live bait restrictions on Lake Ontario. I have always preferred fishing with live bait. As a matter of fact, I love fishing in Sodus Bay. But I don’t have much experience fishing with artificial bait. However, I have been told good things about the Gulp! Has anyone been fishing in this area and, if so, can you suggest some artificial bait and colors too? Thank you very much!

Sodus Point Fishing Answer:

Jake has been to Red Lake as well as Pedlar Lake (which isn’t too far from there). Here’s what Jake and his buddies used. They tried yellow (but not chartreuse) twister tails. They were about two and a half to three inches long and had a black jig head. They caught most of their fish with these twister tails while they were on Red Lake. Some of them have been going up to Red Lake for more than 15 years. Don’t forget that it’s yellow twister tails and not chartreuse. If you go farther north for fishing, you should use a white or yellow Mepps lure with a steel leader. This works really well. Fishing with yellow might be the best advice you can get. It sure was for Jake and his friends. So be sure to take plenty of it with you. Good luck and have fun. I am sure you will.
